Crowley had a love-hate relationship with London, but the city was where he spent much of his adult life, and it was the capital of the culture that created him: Crowley was a post-decadent with deviant Victorian roots in the cultural ferment of the 1890s and the magical revival of the Golden Dawn.

Not a walking guide, although many routes could be pieced together from its pages, this is a biography by sites. A fusion of life-writing with psychogeography, steeped in London's social history from Victoria to the Blitz, it draws extensively on unpublished material and offers an exceptionally intimate picture of the Great Beast. We follow Crowley as he searches for prostitutes in Hyde Park and Pimlico, drinks absinthe and eats Chinese food in Soho, and find himself down on his luck in Paddington Green--and never quite losing sight of the illumination that drove him: "the abiding rapture," he wrote in his diary, "which makes a 'bus in the street sound like an angel choir!"

[publisher's note]
[richtext] => 1 [template] => 5 [menuindex] => 8894 [searchable] => 1 [cacheable] => 1 [createdby] => 1 [createdon] => 1664982116 [editedby] => 16 [editedon] => 1687430611 [deleted] => 0 [deletedon] => 0 [deletedby] => 0 [publishedon] => 1664982240 [publishedby] => 1 [menutitle] => [donthit] => 0 [privateweb] => 0 [privatemgr] => 0 [content_dispo] => 0 [hidemenu] => 0 [class_key] => msProduct [context_key] => web [content_type] => 1 [uri] => city-of-the-beast-the-london-of-aleister-crowley.html [uri_override] => 0 [hide_children_in_tree] => 0 [show_in_tree] => 0 [properties] => [article] => [price] => 26 [old_price] => 0 [weight] => 0 [image] => [thumb] => [vendor] => 0 [made_in] => [new] => 0 [popular] => 0 [favorite] => 0 [tags] => Array ( [0] => ) [color] => Array ( [0] => ) [size] => Array ( [0] => ) [source] => 2 [vendor.name] => [vendor.resource] => [vendor.country] => [vendor.logo] => [vendor.address] => [vendor.phone] => [vendor.fax] => [vendor.email] => [vendor.description] => [vendor.properties] => [author] => BAKER, Phil [booksAvailable] => 1 [category] => Literature [publisher] => Strange Attractor Press [releaseDate] => 2022 [idx] => 1 ) Array ( [id] => 33573 [type] => document [contentType] => text/html [pagetitle] => Austin Osman Spare - The life and legend of London's lost artist [longtitle] => [description] => [alias] => austin-osman-spare-the-life-and-legend-of-londons-lost-artist [link_attributes] => [published] => 1 [pub_date] => 0 [unpub_date] => 0 [parent] => 50 [isfolder] => 0 [introtext] => [content] =>
London has harboured many curious characters, but few more curious than the artist and visionary Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956).

A controversial enfant terrible of the Edwardian art world, the young Spare was hailed as a genius and a new Aubrey Beardsley, while George Bernard Shaw reportedly said “Spare’s medicine is too strong for the average man.”

But Spare was never made for worldly success and he went underground, falling out of the gallery system to live in poverty and obscurity south of the river. The second volume of London's Lost Rivers explores eleven more rivers that have been buried, hidden or mislaid across the city—watercourses that have been culverted, placed in tunnels, or diverted into the sewer system. But while they may be hidden from view, clues remain, and this book will show you how to find them. These eleven walks trace the routes of buried rivers, tracking the impression they have left on the landscape and cityscape of London. Walks include the little-known Cock and Pye Ditch that shaped Covent Garden, Tottenham's Moselle River (not to be confused with the French version), the East End's unsavory-sounding Black Ditch, and the Ravensbourne, linking rural Bromley to the heart of the British Navy at Deptford. Accompanied by S. F. Said's haunting and evocative Polaroid photographs, this guidebook tracks routes that are recorded on no map, stripping back the layers to reveal London's veins and arteries. In her new memoir, All in the Downs, Collins tells the story of that lifelong relationship with English folksong—a dedication to artistic integrity that has guided her through the triumphs and tragedies of her life. All in the Downs combines elements of memoir—from her working-class origins in wartime Hastings to the bright lights of the 1950s folk revival in London—alongside reflections on the role traditional music and the English landscape have played in shaping her vision. From formative field recordings made with Alan Lomax in the United States to the “crowning glories” recorded with her sister Dolly on the Sussex Downs, she writes of the obstacles that led to her withdrawal from the spotlight and the redemption of a new artistic flourishing that continues today with her unexpected return to recording in 2016. Through it all, Shirley Collins has been guided and supported by three vital and inseparable loves: traditional English song, the people and landscape of her native Sussex, and an unwavering sense of artistic integrity. All in the Downs pays tribute to these passions, and in doing so, illustrates a way of life as old as England, that has all but vanished from this land. Hieratic, ecstatic, and endlessly evasive, the Order attracts sensual misfits and cabalistic aesthetes—both to its ranks, and to its scholarship.
In recent years, however, the revisionist work of the research collective ESTAR(SER) has done much to clear the air, bringing archival precision to the history of this covey of attention-artists who call themselves The Birds. More than just a literary curiosity, this tale of a teenager whose passion for a world-famous cola drink threatens to ruin his life is the uniquely vivid expression of a young woman trying to make sense of the confusing, often brutal, world in which she found herself.

Originally published by a vanity press who took £500 from its young author and gave her only a single book in return, it’s thought that fewer than ten original copies still exist. Shortly after its publication, June-Alison and her sister Jennifer would become infamous as “The Silent Twins” and find themselves cruelly incarcerated for over a decade in Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.

Created in collaboration with June-Alison Gibbons, this new edition makes her remarkable vision widely-available for the first time. Don Mee Choi writes: 'Kim's poetry goes beyond the expectations of established aesthetics and traditional "female poetry" (yoryusi), which is characterised by its passive, refined language. In her experimental work she explores women's multiple and simultaneous existence as grandmothers, mothers, and daughters in the context of Korea's highly patriarchal society, a nation that is still under neo-colonial rule by the US. Kim's poetics are rooted in her attempt to resist conventional literary forms and language long defined by men in Korea. Why do we find ourselves so attracted to the cheap and vulgar, the discarded, the misshapen and the abject? What do we really mean when we say that something is “so bad it’s good,” and what finally does it say about us? Part personal confession and part historical roadmap of tales from the underground and exploitation movie scene in America during the 1960s, Inferno takes the reader on a journey deep into the heart of the trash experience.

With Inferno, Hollings offers a complex and intricate timeline of connections, coincidences, and resonances that have mostly gone unnoticed. He traces the transmission of “the Purple Death,” a deadly and exotic virus first depicted in an old episode of a Flash Gordon movie serial, through the films of Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, and Kenneth Anger and into the output of such exploitation pioneers as Ray Dennis Steckler, Hershel Gordon Lewis, and Russ Meyer. Hollings also turns his idiosyncratic gaze upon key aspects of teenage culture during the 1960s, including hot rods, “Rat Fink,” surfers, bikers, and beach parties, uncovering a secretive and hidden universe of masks, fake identities, and secret desires. Even Dante would think twice about taking this trip into Hell. Through it all, he turned the handle on the Vine Press, publishing books of nature writing and folksong; neo-pagan poems and utopian philosophy; hymns to Old Gods and paeans to love and wonder. Obsolete Spells offers selections from every Vine Press book, including texts by Neuburg and many others, most of which have been out of print for a century. Introductory essays by editor Justin Hopper, a foreword by Richard McNeff and an afterword by Margaret Jennings-White (daughter of author Rold White) round out this unique glimpse into a lost literary idyll. Appearing as if from nowhere, he turned Timothy Leary on to LSD in 1962, and was influential in Leary's years at Harvard, Millbrook, and beyond. A Zelig-like character, Hollingshead was a key player in London's early LSD scene. In 1965 he went to London to establish a cultural beachhead for Leary's LSD philosophy at the World Psychedelic Centre in Chelsea. Following a spell in prison, where he dosed KGB spy George Blake, he continued to pursue adventures with the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, established a psychedelic commune, created the first electronic I Ching installation, published an underground magazine, and spent time in Nepal, before dying a mysterious death in Bolivia in the 1980s.

Psychedelic trickster guru, or conman and charlatan? Exactly who Hollingshead was and what his motives were remain unclear. Some believed he was working for the secret services, others that he was just a Leary wannabe, his aspirations destroyed by his deviant personality and addiction to alcohol and opiates. Divine Rascal is the first reliable biography of one of psychedelia's key figures, without whom the trajectory of LSD in the world would have been radically different. The band's image adorned psychedelic posters and its music was the theme song for an alternative lifestyle.

Rose and partner Mike Heron believed in, and lived, a naive vision of utopia in Scotland. But they were also a band on tour, enjoying the thrills of that life. They were at the center of “Swinging London” and at the Chelsea Hotel with Andy Warhol's superstars. They shared stages with rock idols and played at Woodstock in 1969. Rose and fellow ISB member Licorice were hippie pin-ups, while Heron and Robin Williamson the seers and prophets of a new world.

Through a haze of incense and marijuana, they played out their Arcadian dreams on stages brilliant with the colors of clothes, light-shows, rugs, cushions, and exotic instruments. Like most utopias, the ISB's imploded. Never seeing herself as a professional musician, Rose retained an outsider's detachment even while living the life of a hippie chick. Her memoir gives a voice to those flower-wreathed girls whose photographs have become symbols of the psychedelic sixties.

[publisher's note]
[richtext] => 1 [template] => 5 [menuindex] => 6840 [searchable] => 1 [cacheable] => 1 [createdby] => 16 [createdon] => 1618060124 [editedby] => 16 [editedon] => 1653751873 [deleted] => 0 [deletedon] => 0 [deletedby] => 0 [publishedon] => 1618060380 [publishedby] => 16 [menutitle] => [donthit] => 0 [privateweb] => 0 [privatemgr] => 0 [content_dispo] => 0 [hidemenu] => 0 [class_key] => msProduct [context_key] => web [content_type] => 1 [uri] => muse-odalisque-handmaiden.html [uri_override] => 0 [hide_children_in_tree] => 0 [show_in_tree] => 0 [properties] => [article] => [price] => 24 [old_price] => 0 [weight] => 0 [image] => [thumb] => [vendor] => 0 [made_in] => [new] => 1 [popular] => 0 [favorite] => 0 [tags] => Array ( [0] => ) [color] => Array ( [0] => ) [size] => Array ( [0] => ) [source] => 2 [vendor.name] => [vendor.resource] => [vendor.country] => [vendor.logo] => [vendor.address] => [vendor.phone] => [vendor.fax] => [vendor.email] => [vendor.description] => [vendor.properties] => [author] => SIMPSON, Rose [booksAvailable] => 1 [category] => Scenes,Music & Sound,Biographies [publisher] => Strange Attractor Press [releaseDate] => 2020 [idx] => 29 ) Array ( [id] => 35078 [type] => document [contentType] => text/html [pagetitle] => Music From Elsewhere: Haunting Tunes From Mythical Beings, Hidden Worlds, and Other Curious Sources [longtitle] => [description] => [alias] => music-from-elsewhere [link_attributes] => [published] => 1 [pub_date] => 0 [unpub_date] => 0 [parent] => 50 [isfolder] => 0 [introtext] => [content] =>

A cacophonous cabinet of curiosities, gathering other musics channeled from the spirit world, the fairy kingdom, outer space, secret societies and occult lodges. His sexually charged, fearlessly personal style of filmmaking has never been in vogue with mainstream critics, but for lovers of the strange and sado-erotic he is a magician, spinning his unique and disturbing dream worlds from the cheapest of budgets.

In the world of Jess Franco freedom was the key, and he pushed at the boundaries of taste and censorship repeatedly, throughout an astonishingly varied career spanning sixty years. The director of more than 180 films, at his most prolific he worked in a supercharged frenzy that yielded as many as twelve titles per year, making him one of the most generative auteurs of all time.

Franco's taste for the sexy and horrific, his lifelong obsession with the Marquis De Sade, and his roving hand-held camera style launched a whole new strain of erotic cinema. Disturbing, exciting, and defiantly avant-garde, films such as Necronomicon, Vampyros Lesbos, Virgin Among the Living Dead, and Venus in Furs are among the jewels of European horror, while a plethora of multiple versions, re-edits and echoes of earlier works turn the Franco experience into a dizzying hall of mirrors, further entrancing the viewer who dares enter Franco's domain.

Stephen Thrower has devoted five years to examining each and every Franco film. This book—the second in a two-volume set—delves into the latter half of Franco's career, covering titles including Shining Sex, Barbed Wire Dolls, Swedish Nympho Slaves, and Lilian the Perverted Virgin.

Assisted by the esteemed critic and researcher Julian Grainger, Thrower shines a light into the darkest corners of the Franco filmography and uncovers previously unknown and unsuspected facts about their casts, crews, and production histories.

Unparalleled in scope and ambition, Flowers of Perversion brings Franco's career into focus with a landmark study that aims to provide the definitive assessment of Jess Franco's labyrinthine film universe.

[publisher's note]
[richtext] => 1 [template] => 5 [menuindex] => 11086 [searchable] => 1 [cacheable] => 1 [createdby] => 16 [createdon] => 1709127713 [editedby] => 16 [editedon] => 1709128899 [deleted] => 0 [deletedon] => 0 [deletedby] => 0 [publishedon] => 1709128020 [publishedby] => 16 [menutitle] => [donthit] => 0 [privateweb] => 0 [privatemgr] => 0 [content_dispo] => 0 [hidemenu] => 0 [class_key] => msProduct [context_key] => web [content_type] => 1 [uri] => flowers-of-perversion-the-delirious-cinema-of-jesús-franco.html [uri_override] => 0 [hide_children_in_tree] => 0 [show_in_tree] => 0 [properties] => [article] => [price] => 60 [old_price] => 0 [weight] => 0 [image] => [thumb] => [vendor] => 0 [made_in] => [new] => 0 [popular] => 0 [favorite] => 0 [tags] => Array ( [0] => ) [color] => Array ( [0] => ) [size] => Array ( [0] => ) [source] => 2 [vendor.name] => [vendor.resource] => [vendor.country] => [vendor.logo] => [vendor.address] => [vendor.phone] => [vendor.fax] => [vendor.email] => [vendor.description] => [vendor.properties] => [author] => THROWER, Stephen [booksAvailable] => 1 [category] => Film & Video [publisher] => Strange Attractor Press [releaseDate] => 2019 [idx] => 31 ) Array ( [id] => 35927 [type] => document [contentType] => text/html [pagetitle] => Bat Girls and Acid Boys The Spontaneous Drawings of Leigh Bowery & Friends [longtitle] => [description] => [alias] => bat-girls-and-acid-boys-the-spontaneous-drawings-of-leigh-bowery-and-friends [link_attributes] => [published] => 1 [pub_date] => 0 [unpub_date] => 0 [parent] => 50 [isfolder] => 0 [introtext] => [content] =>
In the wild years of the 1980s and early 1990s, when central London was a clubbers’ paradise, a circle of young, queer friends, including the celebrated Australian designer, performer, musician, and provocateur Leigh Bowery and his Minty bandmates would get together at Richard Torry’s Soho flat before hitting the town. Today, corporate firms hire trend forecasters and scenario planners to play out strategic fictions in virtual worlds. Hurricane insurance markets simulate a turbulent climate to offer investment instruments to hedge against the risks of the stock market. And for financial astrologers operating in the city of London, celestial motions provide a cosmic map that orients the mood of terrestrial markets.

Bringing together artists, researchers, and interstitial practitioners, Catastrophe Time! pays attention to the conditions of speculative knowledge on an increasingly volatile planet. Traversing a gray zone between rigorous research and operative science fictions, its contributors question how practices of speculation may transform, undermine, and at times exceed, the worlds they set out to model.

Edited by artist Gary Zhexi Zhang, Catastrophe Time! explores the power of temporal technologies—whether currencies, conspiracies, or simulation models—to shape reality through fiction. By bringing together researchers and writers working at the boundaries of temporal practices, including Diann Bauer, Philip Grant, Bahar Noorizadeh, Habib William Kherbek, Klara Kofen, Kei Kreutler, Suhail Malik, Bassem Saad and Gordon Woo, this urgent volume seeks to make sense of the unraveling times in which we live.
