The news reported over and over that everyone, every living American, was enraptured by the alien object. There were crowds at Jones Beach and the city had a hectic, anticipatory air, crammed with tourists of all kinds, many who evidently never been to New York before. Bird felt alone in not caring. She was tired of talking about aliens. She wanted to talk about her feelings. But her boyfriend Dog was among the enraptured many.
