Pilgrim Badges of the Middle Ages

Pilgrimage was a highly important ritual in the Middle Ages. It was seen as an opportunity to connect with the divine and strengthen faith, and was encouraged by both the church and the authorities. Pilgrims would travel far and wide to see the sites where saints had been martyred, holy miracles had happened, or where saintly relics were kept and displayed.

Many pilgrims would look to take home a souvenir from their trip, including earth or small stones, but in order to protect the sacred sites churches commissioned artisans to produce pilgrim souvenirs in the form of pewter badges.

Badges were sold to pilgrims all across Europe in their millions. A souvenir associated with each holy place offered proof that the wearer had completed the difficult journey, as well as providing continued protection from the Saint on the return home. The medieval equivalent of hitting the gift shop on your way out!

This book includes an introductory text, 200+ images of pilgrim badges, and examples of pilgrim badges in paintings and manuscripts from the Medieval era.

There are four different colour variations, and each cover is foiled with an array of real badge designs - every one is different and unique! A reference booklet is included in the back of the book on a 100% silk cord. [author's note]
