Philippe Parreno: Anywhen

Published on the occasion on Philippe Parreno’s exhibition Anywhen in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2016—“a dramatic new work featured here is conceived as an automaton that guides the viewer through a constantly changing play of moving elements, light configurations, sound environments and film screenings, so that no two encounters are the same,” as “the sequences of events are triggered by software that is informed by microorganisms living in a bioreactor—this monograph proposes a rather rich approach of the maverick French artist’s work. A conversation between the artist and Anywhen’s curator, Andrea Lissoni, and an essay by Zoe Stillpass offer good insights into Parreno’s career and working practice. Furthermore, the section titled, “Is an Exhibition a Film without a Camera?,” edited by Parreno, develops as a visual essay where the artist proposes “a personal selection from the history of those exhibitions that have rethought and radically transformed the notion of art.” That’s why we have it here at the shop.
