YAMAGUCHI, Harumi
Harumi Gals
"This catalogue for an exhibition features a selection of iconic illustrations created by Harumi Yamaguchi for the PARCO chain of department stores in Japan. Since 1972, Yamaguchi has depicted female figures using airbrush techniques, establishing herself as an illustrator that symbolized the era. Contrary to notions of eroticism as portrayed from the commonly male perspective in pin-ups, her women seem to unabashedly celebrate their own sexuality and existence. Besides the glossy elegance of ads for stockings and lingerie, Yamaguchi’s subjects are also shown engaged in “male” sports like skateboarding, boxing, and baseball, an ironic gesture in society of the time."
