PAS, Johan
Artists’ Publications: The Belgian Contribution

An impressive volume, completely dedicated to the production of books, periodicals, zines, and other objects with pages in the Belgian context, from the late 19th century up to now. ‘Belgian contributions’ means here the work of Belgian artists as well as Belgian publishers, thus proposing an international, exciting, picture of artists’ engagement with printed matter over the so-called modern contemporary eras.

Johan Pas proposes a study in three parts. In the first one he's introducing his method and approach, and the specific problems one is faced when studying publications by artists. The second part proposes a historical perspective on 125 years of prined art in Belgium, from Max Elskamp to Jan Kempenaers and Joëlle Tuerlinckx, via Guy Schraenen, Jacques Charlier, Jef Geys, etc. The last chapter focuses on the years 1965 to 2015, highlighting some 50 books and presenting them in pictures, accompanied with detailed bibliographical information.

With prefaces by Geert Lernout and Anne Thurmann-Jajes.

Johan Pas lectures on modern art and artists’ publications at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
