The Conditions of Being Art. Pat Hearn Gallery & American Fine Arts, Co.

Pat Hearn and Colin de Land have been key figures of the New York art galleries scene of the 1980s and ’90s, working with artists such as Renée Green, Stephan Dillemuth, Lutz Bacher, Mary Heilmann, Andrea Fraser, Art Club 2000, Jason Simon—to name by a few. Drawing on their personal archives, the book examines the activities of Pat Hearn Gallery and de Land's American Fine Arts, Co. (1983–2004), illustrating their distinctive artistic practices, significant exhibitions and events, and daily business. This publication follows the exhibition by the same title, curated by Jeannine Tang, Ann E. Butler, and Lia Gangitano, that was presented at CCS Bard / Hessel Museum of Art in 2018.

With contributions by Johanna Burton, Jill Casid, Lauren Cornell, Diedrich Diederichsen, Jennifer King, Mason Leaver-Yap, and Kobena Mercer.
