Ten Illustrations for “The Fall of the House of Usher” by E. A. Poe

The guest sits on his brown mare with his back to us so we look through his eyes at the blind windows and rank sedges and the coming on of twilight and season.

Published on the occasion of Robert Glück’s exhibition, I’d Like to Tell Time What to Do, at Treize, Paris, in January 2024, this chapbook proposes ten “illustrations” for Poe’s famous novella. Glück proceeds to freeze-frame specific sentences and moments in Usher, zooming on details, letting sounds be heard, throwing the reader into a new scene of ideas and sensations. Each page is framed by a b&w photograph by Chris Komater: a close-up of a body, of flesh, that seems to be coming from the original House of Usher, “of the feeling that Poe creates of oppressive confinement … The edges of the pages have to be touched by fingers to turn each page, hands touching sensitive and unknown areas of skin, recalling Roderick’s sensual hypersensitivity” (Komater).

Publié à l’occasion de l’exposition de Robert Glück I’d Like to Tell Time What to Do à Treize, Paris, en janvier 2024, ce livret bilingue rassemble dix « illustrations » de La Chute de la Maison Usher de Edgar Allan Poe: soit dix courts textes qui ouvrent et déploient dix moments du texte de Poe, des « arrêts sur phrase » où des détails se révèlent, des sons se font entendre, de nouveaux affects affleurent. Des photographies de Chris Komater – détails de corps en gros plan, en noir et blanc – « encadrent » le texte de Glück, la logique du texte et de l’illustration s’inversant de sorte que les doigts dæs lecteurix s’attardent sur ces peaux inconnues en tournant les pages du livre – livre double, anglais/français, comme la gémellité des deux personnages de Poe, Roderick et Madeline.

Robert Glück est traduit par Vincent Broqua; les citations du texte de E. A. Poe sont reprises de la traduction de Charles Baudelaire.
