WEERASETHAKUL, Apichatpong
A Conversation with the Sun

Published as part of an exhibition of the same name held at Bangkok City City Gallery in May 2023. Apichatpong Weerasethakul began his career as a film writer and collected his images and video footage as a means of documenting his life, and based on this he began this project. This book is a product of that process and is filled with conversations created using OpenAI's GPT-3 model with the help of Pat Pataranutaporn of the MIT Media Lab.

It begins with an everyday conversation with the sun, but soon various (fictional) characters, including Krishnamurti, Dali, Arthur C. Clarke, Tilda Swinton, and an unknown Indian girl raised by wolves, appear and disappear, creating a fantastical space. They each raise their own topics and continue the conversation with each other. However, all of these conversations were created by prompts given to GPT-3 by author Apichapong Weerasethakul. This book provides the reader with a conversation that provides a glimpse into the thoughts of the author named Apichatpong, but at the same time, it is also an artist book by the author, who creates a narrative and structure by introducing and controlling various characters, like a movie.
