Stephen Kaltenbach: The Beginning and The End
Ho! So little has been written and published on Stephen Kaltenbach, that the presentation of this catalogue on the distributor’s website calls him “a lost veteran of American conceptualism.” Alas, poor Yorick! This is a rather stern monograph, but it aims at being a comprehensive one. Don’t judge the book by its cover, but by its contributors: Gwen Allen, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer, and Lawrence Rinder! Each focuses on specific works: Kaltenbach’s seminal Artforum Ads of 1968-69; his series of Life-Dramas; and his monumental painting Portrait of My Father (1972-79). The book also includes essays by Constance Lewallen and Ted Mann, co-curators of the 2020 exhibition at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, UC Davis, California.
