LUM, Mary
Plays Modern
Mary Lum’s Plays Modern is a book collaged from mass-market paperback plays. The texts are composed, compressed, cut and laid against each other. Pinched into new arrangements, the original texts form rows, lattices, diamonds and spheres. The collages, originally on transparent vellum, are here paired with their versos, producing on some pages static buzz and on others surprising new narration. The original text suggests speech and movement, Plays Modern acts it out. [publishers’ note]
