Manfred Pernice: Infrastructure
A book published in the aftermath of Manfred Pernice’s exhibition, Infrastructure, first shown at the Institute of Visual Arts (inova), Univ. of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, in 1999, and then at Anton Kern Gallery, NYC, in 2001. The project built upon the connection between the story of a family of butchers in Milwaukee, who emigrated from Germany, and ZDF’s 1960s dwarf mascots known as “Mainzelmännchen.” The book gathers documents from the artist’s archive, installation views, photos taken in Milwaukee, and documents related to vernacular culture as a popular, outdated, but sentimental archive – an idiosyncratic montage that gives the book a diffracted unity – while an essay by Brigitte Kölle unveils the artist’s method and the project’s background.
