Karbid. Berlin – de la lettre peinte au caractère typographique / from lettering to type design / von schriftmalerei zu schriftgestaltung

C'est d’abord un témoignage de l’expérience d’une créatrice de caractères et graphiste berlinoise qui se rendait fréquemment dans le quartier de Prenzlauer Berg, à l’Est de la ville. Verena Gerlach a commencé à prendre conscience de la richesse des inscriptions et des enseignes peintes, parfois très anciennes, et a entrepris de les photographier après la Chute du Mur. Aujourd’hui, il ne reste pratiquement plus rien de ce patrimoine unique, hormis le corpus que constituent ces « photo-documents » largement présentés dans cet ouvrage en regard de leur situation actuelle.

Ces lettres peintes ont suscité en grande partie la création de la famille de caractères typographiques Karbid, publiée en 1999 par FontFont et récemment revue et augmentée. C’est une synthèse contemporaine où épigraphie et typographie se rencontrent en s’appuyant sur le répertoire des lettres créées en Allemagne durant les années 1880-1930. Ce travail exemplaire est accompagné de trois essais qui apportent au lecteur des clés de compréhension du contexte esthétique et commercial allemand de cette période. Ils sont illustrés de documents publicitaires & d’extraits de traités et de manuels de peintre en lettres, rarement ou jamais reproduits depuis leur publication originale. [note de l'éditeur]

It stands firstly as an account of the experience of a Berlin type and graphic designer who used to visit frequently the Prenzlauer Berg area, in the East of the city. She gradually became aware of the richness of the painted signs and store names, some very old. After the Fall of the Wall, she undertook to photograph most of them. Today, nothing remains of this unique héritage, except for these ‘photo-documents’ that are largely shown in this publication and compared with their current locations.

These painted letters mainly inspired the design of the Karbid typeface family, released in 1999 by FontFont et recently revised and enlarged. Karbid is a contemporary combina-tion of lettering and typography, fueled by the répertoire of letterforms created in Germany during the 1880–1930s. This exemplary body of work comes with three essays that provide the reader with crucial information on the esthetical and commercial context in Germany during this era. They are illustrated with examples coming from the advertising field, as well as excerpts of letter painting manuals, rarely (if ever) reproduced since their first publication. [publisher's note]
