ROOIJ, Willem de
Index
The book version of Willem de Rooij’s work, Index: between 1999 and 2002, the artist collected around 500 images, cut out of daily newspapers, all depicting protest marches and moments of collective mourning.
In 2002 he organized these images on eighteen framed panels, on which the images are placed in chronological order. Index became an inquiry in the iconography of protest, and at the same time documents a way of working with printed matter.
With texts by Sven Lütticken and Pablo Martínez.
Published on the occasion of Willem de Rooij’ exhibition, Index: Riots, Protest, Mourning and Commemoration (as represented in newspapers, January 2000- July 2002), at Arnolfini, Bristol, in 2014–15; at Index, Stockholm, in 2015; and at MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt-am-Main, 2016–17.
