Mother Media. Hot and Cool Parenting in the Twentieth Century by Hannah Zeavin

From the nursery to the prison, from the clinic to the commune, Mother Media tells the story of how we arrived at our contemporary understanding of what a mother is and how understandings of “bad” mothering formed our contemporary panics about “bad” media. Hannah Zeavin examines 20th-century pediatric, psychological, educational, industrial, and economic norms around mediated mothering and technologized parenting – from the crisis of the family to the many ingenious attempts to remediate nursemaid and mother via speculative technologies and screen media.

Dans ce livre, Hannah Zeavin, historienne de la psychologie, revient sur la manière dont s‘est formée l’idée contemporaine de ce que doit être une mère, et met en relation la notion de « mauvaise » mère avec les craintes suscitées par la « mauvaise » influence des médias. L’autrice analyse les dimensions médiatiques et technologiques de la maternité et de la parentalité – sous leurs aspects psychologique, éducatif, économique, et pédiatrique.

La première monographie dédiée au collectif des Hackney Flashers, groupe de neuf femmes activistes qui ont pratiqué l'agit-prop de 1974 à 1980 dans le quartier populaire de Hackney à Londres. Les travaux des Hackney Flashers dénoncent les inégalités de salaire entre femmes et hommes, la double journée de travail pour les mères et les images mi-infantiles, mi-glamour des femmes que diffusent les médias de l'époque. Photographe, journaliste, éditrice, graphiste, illustratrice : les profils de ce groupe féministe socialiste et non-mixte ont donné toute sa singularité à une pratique d'affichage dans des espaces publics de panneaux composés d'images, de texte, de slogans et d'illustrations. Publié par Tombolo et designé par Charles Mazé & Coline Sunier, le livre a été primé aux Plus Beaux Livres Suisses 2024.

The first book dedicated to the Hackney Flashers collective, a group of nine activist women who engaged in agitprop from 1974 to 1980 in the working-class neighborhood of Hackney in London.Hackney Flashers' works denounce wage inequalities between women and men, the double burden of work for mothers, and the half-infantile, half-glamorous images of women disseminated by the media of the time. Photographer, journalist, editor, graphic designer, illustrator: the profiles of this non-mixed socialist feminist group gave its practice of public display a distinctive character, featuring panels composed of images, text, slogans, and illustrations.
