Excellemment mis en forme par Norm, ce livre se déploie comme un essai visuel sur l’exposition et son display, à partir d’un entretien entre Nicolas Trembley et Véronique Bacchetta.

Finally! the official launch of our fantastic release, Nicolas Trembley’s Craft: About Exhibitions, Craft, Art, Cultural Hierarchies, Typologies and the Art of Display, the book about exhibition practices and the art of display that YOU need. With a wide range of illustrations, exhibition photographs, pictures from the author’s library, and historical documents cogently organized in Norm’s book design, Craft reads as a stimulating visual essay on the exhibition form.

Proposant une large perspective historique – des cabinets de curiosité aux white cubes et vitrines d’aujourd’hui, en passant par les expériementations d’artistes et curateur·trices tels que Andy Warhol, Lina Bo Bardi ou Frederick Kiesler – Craft s’intéresse aux échanges complexes entre art contemporain, arts décoratifs, et artisanat, en revenant notamment sur les recherches de Trembley sur le Mingei. À rebours des hiérarchies et des systèmes préétablis, Craft propose une approche dynamique et réflexive des questions de culture, d’histoire et d’esthétique qui sont aujourd’hui au cœur même de l’acte d’exposer. 

Discussing with fellow curator Véronique Bacchetta his own curatorial methods and meditating on the power of display, Trembley unfolds his research on Japanese folk art, as well as his collaborations with various artists. As he comments on the groundbreaking approach of curators such as Georges Henri Rivière, Sōetsu Yanagi, or Harald Szeemann, and evokes landmarks in the history of exhibition making – from curiosity cabinets to world fairs, to ethnographic dioramas, window displays, and experiments by contemporary artists – Trembley argues against pre-established hierarchies, for a more complex approach to objects, cultures, and forms.
