\°°°0°°°/ Very happy to invite you to a conversation between Joanna Walsh and Lauren Elkin, for the Paris launch of Walsh’s latest book, Amateurs! How We Built Internet Culture and Why It Matters.

In this “scintillating philosophical history of the internet,” Walsh examines how, since the 90s, from blogs to vlogs, tweets to memes, online creativity has become work itself. “Whatever it is we’re creating online, it isn’t amateur anymore. But is it art?”

Joanna Walsh a multidisciplinary writer for print, digital and performance. The author of 12 books (several co-written with DIY AIs that she coded), her publishers include Semiotext(e), JOAN and Verso. She is the creator of the digital narratives, seed-story.com and miss-communication.ie. Her work has been performed/exhibited at venues including IMMA, the ICA, BETA Festival Dublin, and Sample Studios Cork. She founded and directed the online activist projects @read_women (2014-18), and @noentry_arts (2019-24). She was the 2020 Markievicz Awardee for Literature in Ireland, the 2017 UK Arts Foundation fellow for literature; the Anthony Burgess Centenary Writer Fellow at the University of Manchester in 2017 and the 2024 DAAD Artists in Berlin awardee for literature (refused in solidarity with Palestine).

Lauren Elkin is a French and American writer and translator. She is the author of several books, including Art Monsters, No. 91/12, and Flâneuse, which was a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, a New York Times Notable Book of 2017, and a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. Her essays have appeared in Granta, the London Review of Books, Le Monde, and Frieze, among others, and in the past year she has translated work by Simone de Beauvoir, Lola Lafon, and Constance Debré, as well as the authoritative biography of Louise Bourgeois.
