A Cantos Compendium
A long-awaited publication on the fascinating work of Paulo de Cantos (1892-1979), a Portuguese publisher, bibliophile, educator, and amateur typographer who wrote, designed, and published around 40 titles between 1920 and 1960 … whose work was rediscovered and reevaluated thanks to the editors of this book – who organized a series of “Jornada Cantianas” at Oporto im Lisboa in 2012.
The book contains 4 essays – António Silveira Gomes, Sébastien Dégeilh, Éloïsa Pérez, Mário Moura – that expand on the life and work of Cantos in the context of Portuguese and European design and pedagogy, followed by visual essays of his work from the speculative perspective of shuffling the pack and recombining his oeuvre in a composite Cantos-style exercise.
