Paintings as bookmarks—or bookmarks as paintings? Ideal library pictures, in any case.
French artist Armand Jalut has often exhibited over the past years paintings made from offcuts of unfinished canvases. This upcycling practice owes a lot to editing: what’s at stake here is handling, cutting, framing, zooming… With their lenghty format the small paintings conceived for After 8 Books are consonant with the shapes of folds, seams, zips, and drapes Jalut is currently working on.
Armand Jalut’s paintings stem from an eclectic visual culture: he combines vernacular and pop references with an alternative canon of art history, where the deviant and the erotic act as counter-values. Jalut is based in Paris, and is represented by galerie Michel Rein.
