Figure majeure du design graphique européen contemporain, Wim Crouwel (1928-2019) a marqué l’histoire de la discipline par sa pratique étendue du design, appliquée tant au domaine culturel qu’au domaine commercial. Au cours de sa carrière, il a réalisé à la fois des travaux de création typographique, des identités visuelles, de la signalétique, des affiches, des travaux d’édition, ou encore la scénographie d’expositions. Dès les années 1950, et durant les décennies suivantes, ce néerlandais, dont le rayonnement dépasse largement les frontières des Pays-Bas, est parvenu à développer une approche de la création graphique alliant l’héritage moderniste à la fantaisie du pop.

À travers deux textes rédigés par Emmanuel Berard et Catherine de Smet, et un texte inédit de Wim Crouwel, cet ouvrage, édité une premièe fois en 2007, témoigne de la diversité de son œuvre et revient sur son travail sur les identités visuelles, l’édition, ou la création d’affiches. As a major figure in contemporary European graphic design, Wim Crouwel (1928-2019) has widely influenced the history of the discipline through his extensive practice of design, applied both to the cultural and commercial field. Over the course of his career, he has carried out simultaneously works in the range of typographic creation, visual identities, posters, book design, or scenography.

In the 1950s and for decades, Wim Crouwel, whose influence extends beyond borders of the Netherlands to a large extent, has managed to develop an approach to graphic design combining modernist heritage with pop fantasy.

Through three texts written by Wim Crouwel, Catherine de Smet and Emmanuel Berard, this book testifies the diversity of Wim Crouwel’s work and analyzes his wide range of production in diverse fields such as visual identities, publishing, or poster creation. Abundantly illustrated, this book focuses on the layout of the catalogues made for museums such as the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam, as well as on the genesis and presentation of the New Alphabet, created between 1964 and 1967.
