The Daily Bread is a collection of beginnings. It stems from Dépense Défensive’s residency at Le Petit Versailles community garden on the Lower East Side, between the 2nd and the 17th of August, 2018. Everyday, the artists would choose, print, and read out loud the first chapter of a book: through the words of Emily Dickinson and Sun Tzu, Auguste Blanqui and Jean Genet, the readings allowed a multiplicity of encounters, and initiated a community, around issues of production, disobedience, and “availability.”

The book gathers and archives those fifteen chapters, along with pictures documenting performances and installations, expanding the project and extending its reach. For the release: greenhouse soundgarden at the bookstore.

The Daily Bread est un recueil de commencements. Le livre s’inscrit dans la suite d’une résidence-exposition de Dépense Défensive au Petit Versailles, jardin communautaire du Lower East Side, entre le 2 et le 17 août 2018. Chaque jour, le premier chapitre d’un livre était choisi, imprimé, distribué, et lu sur place. Entre Emily Dickinson et Aimé Césaire, Lautréamont et Genet, une réflexion sur la désobéissance, l'existence, la “disponibilité”, prend forme au sein d’une nouvelle communauté. 

Le livre compile la reading list de la résidence, accompagnée de documents et d’images prolongeant le projet et son récit. Pour le lancement: effet de serre + effets sonores.
