After 8 Books is an independent bookstore and publisher based in Paris.
The bookstore, onsite and online, welcomes the printed endeavours of contemporary artists, thinkers, writers, musicians, poets, and other art workers. We work with international publishers, mostly independent ones, involved in questions of art, culture, and theory. We propose a “handpicked” selection of new and seminal monographs, artists’ books, catalogues, essays, novels, non fiction books, journals and zines, that you may not find altogether ever again.
After 8 Books is a non-profit organization, run by a small group of writers, artists and designers, with the help of volunteers. Together we’ve developed the project of the bookshop and the press, as a small-scale, self-sustainable, structure focusing on the book as a work, a vessel, an experiment, a world of its own that can fit in a pocket (or a tote bag)(or a big bag, depending on the graphic designer’s impetus).
Within a few years After 8 Books has grown, inside of a dozen square meters in a dark Benjaminian passageway; it is now at a decisive moment of its existence.
This Spring, we are taking a leap towards a new chapter for our structure, moving into a new location, at 7 rue Jarry, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris!
The space is bigger than our actual premises, but very much in need of renovation.
Thus the purpose of this fundraising campaign is to help us cover the major furbishing works as well as the costs of building new shelves, tables, desks, for the books, for us, and for you.
We aim at making our “new” space a welcoming place for readers, artists, students, publishers; where there will be room for books and records, for browsing and discussing them, finding forgotten ones and discovering new ones, in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and as many other languages as possible.
We also plan at continuing our programme of events, readings, and book launches, and extending it with screenings, lectures, listening sessions, and workshops, maybe small exhibitions, insofar as renovation goes as we planned it.
Your contribution is important, if not decisive, for the future of After 8 Books … Thank you for your help!
